the ones with good strong poles and steel cables around the edges for tension don't flap - and if there is a hurricane a coming then u can pull them down!
plus they aren't all shadecloth, they can be waterproof
or you can install a pull out awing that runs on overhead rails. then all you would be putting up would be an open air pergola - let the sun in during winter and shade during summer.
