Downloading shows & music is simply NOT theft. It is not akin to shoplifting a DVD.
In downloading, the original has not been removed from the rightful owner (unlike shoplifting), nor has it been damaged or affected. The music/movie industry have been very successul pushing this "theft" line.
What downloading shows & music is, is a possible infringement of copywrite laws (in fact I believe in australia copywrite infringement takes place only when uploading, not downloading).
