Political hypothetical

When the earthquake hit Japan a number of MPs were there on an official tour.

Imagine if they'd been caught up in the disaster.

What would happen if an ALP MP was killed in the disaster?

What would happen if a sitting ALP member died right now, or something happened that caused them to step down? There would be a by-election.

The government hold power by one seat. If that was lost...

Depends on the seat. If it was a marginal Labor seat, and they lost the by-election, then parliament would be split at 75-75. Liberals would need either Mr Oakeshott or Mr Windsor to transfer their support from the Labor party.

It would be an interesting time...

eco terrorism is just too expensive dude. let it go....

That is right weg. Also putting the independants to one side, do you think they would have put up with Rudd for this long if they did not have to. It would have been Rudd the independent if the Labor party faithfull told him what they really think about him.

Rudd is obviously a thorn in the Labor party's side - no doubt about that.

As things stand, they need him and he WANTS them, and regardless of what his personal agendas are, he still has Foreign Affairs (next best thing to PM) and the ability to make them sweat in the process.

And sweat Gillard does. Her body language when she's around Rudd speaks a thousand words.

But if there was a by-election and the libs won, do you think an independant would swap sides, or stick by their guns and force a full election?

Maybe look at it like and plan for it,the Labor hierarachy down there think they are aren't answerable to anyone, but what they will find out very shortly the Australian Public control this country not a few who even fewer voted for..
