Hi Aaron
There is usually plenty to do in Hobart but I hear the place closes down for public holidays. Someone else may be more knowledgeable than me on that, I haven't been there over a long weekend. We like to look at the boats, go for a cruise, check out the old buildings, the botanic gardens, Casino if it's your thing. I personally think the weekend markets are overrated, but I love the Greek Taverna at Salamanca and the atmosphere at the old pubs. My friend swears by the brewery for great seafood but I haven't been there myself.

If you have a car, there is Russell Falls about one hour's drive away, north-west past New Norfolk. South you have the Huon region with Hartz and other wineries and east is Port Arthur two hours away but right past where the fires were. One hour north-east is the historic (touristy) town of Richmond, great food at the bakeries.

Doesn't seem to be any cricket this weekend. The One Day was today in Hobart.

Mt. Wellington lookout is a must imo, but you need to hired a car to do so (recommended as you can then have a good look around beautiful Hobart and surrounds).

I love Hobart. Have you been to Port Arthur? Beautiful place. Mona museum of old and modern art, catch a ferry there. Controversial place, check out the toilets too. Salamanca Markets. You would be able to explore more if you have a car. I am envious, would love to go back and see more of Tassie.

Let us know what you end up doing.

Hire a car,

Drive to the West Coast and visit Strahan (4 hour drive).

Do the ABT railway and/or the Gordon river cruise.

Stay the night.

Next day Drive across to Launceston via Cradle Mountain, (max 4 hr drive) then head down to Hobart via Richmond (2 hour drive plus stops) and lots of historic places.

You can drive around the whole island in a day.

Yes, I second Mona if you are into modern art. Also visit some of the wineries around the Coal Valley. Salamanca Market on Saturday morning is good if you haven't been before, and spending some time down around the waterfront near Salamanca is a must. If your more into the wilderness, head south down to the Hartz Mountain Ranges, or Port Arthur if your interested in history. There is a lot to do and you certainly won't see it all in a weekend.

Binalong Bay...Bay of Fires - drive through Bicheno where there were more fires. Recommend staying overnight.

Also second Salamanca Market and the view from Mt Wellington and the Tassie Devils Park on the way to Port Arthur, if you don't want to spend the whole day driving :)

Just love Hobart

Otherwise, send me a pm and I will collect you in Melbourne and take you around the wineries

Chris

Definitely want to do MONA. You could quite easily spend an entire day there very easily. If vineyards are your thing I'd suggest either Homehill Winery or Meadowbank (Meadowbank do have delicious duckfat roasted potatoes :) ) I'd normally also suggest Port Arthur however with the recent Bush Fires the surrounding areas have been fairly badly devestated so maybe next time you're down for that.
The East Coast is a great drive but take your time to enjoy the scenery whereas the West coast is amazing but can be quite a long journey and you wouldn't really get to enjoy the sights like the Sarah Island tour.

Ah, Hobart. My favourite capital city.

MONA. In 2011 I went there on three seperate occasions. It's worth going there for the building as much as the stuff inside it.

Mt Wellington is a nice drive and a fantastic view. Gets cold, though - I was there in October and they shut the road just afetr us becasue of snow.

Port Arthur is great.

Richmond isn't worth the drive - not that it's far.

The shops along the waterfront at Salamanca are pretty good, but the markets are average - every second stall sells something made from huon pine.

Port Arthur is amazing! ( all that misery in such an idyllic setting ). Mona is very interesting too. ( do they still have the display of 110 plaster cast Virgina's ?). See what card counting and being banned from every Casino in the world can do for you!
