My wife's laptop has just stopped working.
It is a Mac about 2 yrs old.
Even with the battery fully charged when you push the on button nothing happens.
Somebody has to say it
Is it a broken 'on' button?
hardware Mac guides, http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac there may be something to help if you click the right model, at least how to get it apart to check the switch

May not be everyone’s cup of tea but you can ways do the 3ft drop test....
Nar on a more serious note, try taking out the HDD and then put it back in or maybe try and connect the power cord in from the wall and see if it then powers up, if so then it will be a battery problem.... Good luck
I had a friend with a MacBook with the same problem, He brought it over so I could take it apart and check it.
I couldn't find anything wrong with the button.
The local Apple dealer replaced the upper case (including power button) which fixed it.
Another friend scored a dead G4 MacMini for free.
Turned out the Optical drive connector was shorted. Reseated and it worked.
Thanks to all that posted.
I took the battery pack out and plugged it into mains supply.
It turned on and fired up all OK
So it looks like a faulty or shorting battery pack
