I had never seen the footage before, but this video shows how badly the pyro explosions in the Pepsi ad actually were, and how this must have affected his health. And it was filmed in front of 5000 people.

I remember the news stories at the time, and there is no doubt he was badly burned. It is entirely possible an addiction to painkillers developed then.
