Circus

i think the Ukraine has always had a bit of hamb fist when it comes to Russia after the Orange Revolution.

on one hand they wanted to take a nice commission from Russia piping gas into the EU - with the EU refusing to pay Ukraine's market price (comm on top of Russias "close to market" new price structure) - yet at the same time the Ukraine want gas cheap because they can't afford Russia's new price structure?

i think it's mostly about the fact that Ukraine won't take a reduced comm, and now Russia wants to buy the pipes through Ukraine.

Russia supplies gas to one side of Ukraine at X price, and it comes out the other side of Ukraine at Y price. so bypassing the Ukraine, like the EU want to do directly with Russia, leaves the Ukraine with no bargaining chips against Russia, which could very literally leave them out in the cold, heat and money wise. imagine if Ukraine DID become a NATO force - could be a Georgia issue all over again.

it's meant to be a great deal for everyone involved, instead everyone values the gas differently and therefore the bickering begins.

aren't there scandanavian gas fields that remain untapped?

What people are thinking about it?
somthing like gee its bloody cold ??
But in all seriousness my wife went to Russia and the temp was -25C you throw a cup of boiling water in the air it coms down as snow??
The only people immuned to this are the drunks that get hold of the vodka, they sleep through the night on the streets, BBBrrrrrrr.

it's much simpler :)
presidential election in Ukraine is this year, around september.
To be elected you need money.

Control of gas pipe is the best source of election funds one can ever have.
The fight was between the prime-minister Timoshenko, who is said to be in control of Naftagaz (state owned gas company) and the current president Yushenko who's brother is said to be in control of RosUkrEnergo - the middle man that buys gas from Russia and sells it to Naftagaz and Europe.

In November Timoshenko agreed with Putin to have the middle man removed and trade directly. However when the time has come, Yushenko decided to block the deal, because it would give an advantage to her.

Since the "orange revolution" happened, ukrainian economy has been going downhill and now Ukraine is on a brink of default. The reason for that is that former orange allies keep fighting with each other for power, and don't care about running the country.
