Era with the best technology "balance"

Hi,

Not too sure how to word this, but when did you reckon we had the best "technology balance". After viewing some science fiction DVDs and seen where technology is headed, it seems it is starting somewhat to intrude on our privacy, everyday lives.

Sure, we can switch off tech and this now seems very alluring at times but the way society is going, there seems to be no escape.I grew up before the Internet age, I quite liked the balance of the early 2000s when I was doing uni (starting in 2000 and finishing uni in 2002).

I thought that period was perhaps best as a balance between human touch and technology...

Not taking anything away from technology, it sure has been a very efficient way to share information and make life a hell of a lot easier but it just seems technology has taken away the personal touch and "human being" side of things.

Thoughts?

It's only a matter of time before Skynet takes over. Didn't you watch Terminator? It's like looking into the future. That or the Zombie Apocalypse, whichever comes first.

Personally, I prefer the Zompocalypse, because that allows for a much higher chance of me becoming a total badarse zombie hunter.

I'm not sure how well Australia would fair in a zombie apocalypse, with all sharp edges being banned and mandatory bubble wrapping of all citizens.

Read an interesting article.

This article claimed the toothbrush as the single most important invention. Apparently before this many folks died quite young from blood poisoning due to rotten teeth.

They also rated the automatic washing machine second as it freed women from what was several days worth of heavy work each week and turning it into what we see now as nothing but a simple chore.

On the bright side, we'd probably do better in a human apocalypse since everyone isn't toting assault rifles around.

CJay, as discussed in chat, a bolt action rifle and a baseball bat are the best weapons against zombies. Most people say shotguns, but shotguns are too unreliable and don't allow for sufficient distance from your targets for effective risk reduction.

Lots of noise (from shooting guns, duh!) attracts more zombies and it's too easy to find yourself compromised using a shotgun. A rifle allows for significant distance for your target and if you pick your shooting spot wisely, allows plenty of time to scarper if the walking dead figure out where you are.

Hard to say.

Every generation will have a different outlook.

I think up until the day of the internet and the advent of online communication such as sms etc.

Until that time, we had a load of great techno goodies and appliances to make life easy, and communication was still good enough with mobile phones, faxes and so on.

Research is probably the greatest improvement since the internet; you can look up absolutely everything; no need to go near a library or call someone hardly ever to find something out.

Nowadays, I can go for years without actually talking to any of my family members (a good thing in some instances ), or visiting them (Skype).

Of course; it's double edged; we can communicate so many things so much faster, but the personal contact has suffered in many ways.

I read somewhere a while back that the power of computing is expanding 1000% per year or was it 10,000% over the last ten year span, and your digital fingerprint tend to be there forever, maybe soon you can have e-prescription from a simple strand of hair that algorithms pick up on health
issues way before Doctors- Medical Specialists know, the best period in time is yesterday because the next day is unknown..

best "tech balance" = the future

driverless cars = no more drink driving, road rage, speeding tickets, parking spots turned into cycleways or gardens, no need to own a car or garage
cancer and other terminal diseases cured
living, longer, healthier lives through science
vacations in space

In a hypothetical breakdown of society and the police etc, I'd sleep a lot easier for owning some pieces of steel. :)
The problem is, everyone else would also own one...including the nutjobs. I'd sleep easier knowing only a few people had guns, and they'll probably run out of ammo soon. Then it's back to bricks and bastball bats!

In the event of a zombie apocalypse, just go to Queensland or NT. The humidity and heat will break them up and they'll fall to pieces with just a light knock. Or get a few dogs...

Forgot to mention, it's also a good idea to carry a handgun for emergencies, but should be used only when absolutely necessary, due to limited accuracy.
