are rare vinyl records worth anything these days?

Does anyone have any opinions as to whether vinyl records will increase much in value in the future? Will newer technology make them more or less valuable in the future? Anyone have any good links to places that specialise in this, or is ebay the go? I am thinking about selling my record collection and want to know if i can get a good price on things such as:

* You're 13 you're beautiful and you're mine by Cold Chisel
* 12" single of Choir Girl with Khe Sanh on the B side by Cold Chisel
* Very first AC/DC album released in Australai
* AC/DC live in Germany, white vinyl
* AC/DC band interview, picture disc

Is it worth listing these separately or should i sell the lot in one go?
Anyone have experience in this?

I don't know anything about what you are selling, except that if listing on ebay, you will generally do better if you list them separately.

I made over $10k selling what I thought was trash on eBay. Stuff I had hoarded since I was a kid. One example - who knew those little plastic cereal box toys would be collectible one day. Having OCD as a child, I never even took mine out of the cellophane packs. Wow, did that get some people excited!
Most such items I found did better either sold individually or in small groups of like items. I'd be inclined to try single items first and see how they go. You can always sell small lots later once you get a feel for what people are wanting.
Good luck!!!

I have some Elvis records. The small ones and the very first ones that came out that are quite thick. I picked them up at Garage sales. Maybe time to see how much they are worth too.

Hi Nomadic,
Here's a couple of links to get you started,
Plastic Passion in Perth
This page has a few AccaDacca vinyls for sale at Ozmusic.

You may be suprised how little they are worth <edit> not your examples but my own old vinyl, I don't know what yours are worth. <edit> $15 $25 dollars and I personally would rather hang onto my memories rather than exchange them for less than a carton of beer.

The picture discs however are rarer and much more sought after.

Rarity is the key as with all collecting for example, I once had an original edition of "Some Girls" by the Stones with Lucille Ball on the cover. Apparently the feisty redhead took offence at being represented on the cover and had the album withdrawn from sale and it was reissued with a non-descript replacement girl.

In my ignorance I lent it to someone and it was never returned. I didn't think it was such a big deal back in the early 80's and just replaced it with a CD. I've since learnt that it is very collectible and if I ever see the mug who I lent it to again it'd probably be worth filing a lawsuit.

Cheers,
Beef

Live DJs like vinyl because they can manipulate them better. Like, control the speeds manually. (well, that was a few years ago. I don't know if technology has managed to catch up with vinyl yet).

Yes definitely and obviously depends on the quality. Near new/pristine rare tracks can attract a lot of money.

I used to DJ and there are a lot of tracks that were only ever released on vinyl, some rare mixes came out on vinyl as promo only and for "DJ use".

These are rare and people are prepared to pay for them...

The face value would not be that high, but to a collector the AC-DC may bring $5O.OO more or less at the auctions you would pay no more than one-dollar,that gives you an idea,i have never seen the white vinyl
by AC-DC live in Germany, that would be worth money overthere they are still into vinyl in a big way..willair..imho..

This reminds me. About 20 years ago i lent a mint condition vinyl copy of Frank Zappa and the Mothers "Freak Out" to a friend. Was their first album and a double. Absolutely mint.

Never saw it again, would be worth quite a bit now i guess. I have lots of old vinyl from the 70s & 80s, i just can't part with it. Even the crap.

I'm sure i have Some Girls out there as i used to be a huge Stones fan, i'll have a look and see if it has Lucille Ball on the cover. I remember the controversy. I think it also included Farrah Fawcett as well.

I have the complete early Roxy Music collection on vinyl. When they were interesting. My favorite album cover of all time. Apparently 2 German girls Brian Ferry snapped at a party.

I've still got my old albums. And I've got a turntable. It's fun (and slightly tragic) at the end of a boozy dinner with friends to get them all out.

Haha, depends on what you're playing.

Sat. Night Fever, Tragic! (but damn, it's somehow involuntarily foot tapping)
Neil Young Harvest, Turntable with clicks and pops is a must. :D

thanks for the replies, some good ones in there. Yes i've been going nuts on ebay and have culled a lot of stuff, just not sure whether it's worth selling the vinyl. But for a few hundred bucks it's probably not worth the anguish and i think i will put them in storage and hold onto them a little bit longer.
Nice links beefhooked, you're right, they ain't worth a lot. I just had a look and the choir girl LP is $40 here

But the one that i remember best was paying $150 for 'you're 13, beautiful' in about 1990 and it was a lot of money back then.
Willair i will check out Germany ebay and see if they like their ACDC over there.

I asked a friend about the AC/DC white album as he is a collector/fan and a white Accadacca record is an interesting talking point.

He thinks given the unusual colour, and being a live recording, esp. from Germany, that it may be a bootleg. He says sometimes due to rarity (limited production numbers and probably no official recording released of a particular concert), they can fetch more than other mass production standard issues. So you may be on a winner with that one, but not a topic I know much about.

Google is your friend :).

Cheers,
Beef.
