Repainting Colorbond Fence

Hi All,

Would anyone know if it is possible to repaint colorbond fence in a way that will be durable?

Glenn

You could try applying a product like ESP beforehand and then spray painting it, but I would guess the best ppl to ask would be Paint Experts such as Dulux or hardware store specialists. I know that you can hire professionals to recoat aluminium window frames (have seen it done at shopping centres and houses that have been rendered and the windows redone in black) but I would imagine that repainting over metal successfully wouldn't be too simple. Good luck and let us know if you discover a solution. I'd be curious myself....

Other option (if you just want to hide an ugly colour) is to put something like lattice or reed in front of it. We put reed panels in front of our green colourbond behind our pool and it hides it extremely well. More cost involved, but I would imagine a lot less labour than painting!

Hi Glenn,
Colorbond finish is an enamel type paint, ie oil base/non water based solvent in paint. So you are not repainting on steel but simply repainting over an enamel based finish.

Main criteria in repainting over enamel and most other painted finishes is to prepare the surface for recoating. Normally this means cleaning dirt and dust off the surface, and if a glossy finish, light sanding to break the gloss and give a finely sanded (grainy/scratched surface) which paint adheres to more readily. If the surface is in good condition (no flaky paint), using sugar soap to wash the surface may be sufficient preparation prior to painting.

cheers

I used to work for BHP in the colorbond manufacturing plant. You CAN paint over colorbond and it's easier if the fence is old. New fencing is 'oiled' so the stacked sheets are easier to handle and of course it still has a more pronounced paint sheen.

You've probably noticed fences where people have tried to repaint over grafitti only to have the new paint job stand out as much as the grafitti itself! That's because the colour in colorbond is actually baked into the metal at high temperatures in an oven and has a different fade rate than 'painted on' paint.

No need to sand etc. just wash/clean. There is an undercoat and colour made by Dulux you can buy especially for this, but I'm damned if I can think of the names now. I've still got a friend who works there so I'll try and found out.

To Jacque, Tasman & Olly,

Thank you very much for your replies. Oly, I would love to find out the name of the undercoat and paint made for colorbond.

Thanks again all

Glenn

Well it turns out that my info was old. It's not a 2 step process anymore. There is a range of paints on the market now called Dulux Colorbond Enamel which does the job in one step and comes with instructions on prep work.

Cheers
